Peruvian amazon music: Machiguengas / Música de la amazonía peruana: Machiguengas

The Machiguenga native group belongs to the Arawakan language family of peruvian amazon. This group is located in the southeastern part of the Peruvian amazon bazin in the states of Cuzco and Madre de Dios.

They call themselves as Machiguengas which means “human being”, and their population at present is around 8,000 people.

The Machiguengas used to be semi-nomadic living in small extended family groups.

Their society has been animistic with believes characterized by fear of several things, from certain varieties of ants to eclipses of the moon. The
living of the machiguenga people has been marked by the constant need to observe some taboos.*

La comunidad nativa de los Machiguengas pertenece a la familia lingüística Arawaka de la amazonía peruana. Este grupo está ubicado en la parte sudeste de la cuenca amazónica peruana en los Departamentos del Cuzco y Madre de Dios.

Ellos se llaman a sí mismos como Machiguengas que significa “seres humanos”, y su población actual es de aproximadamente 8,000 personas.

Los Machiguengas han sido tradicionalmente seminómadas, viviendo en pequeños grupos de la familia extendida.

Su sociedad ha sido animista con creencias caracterizadas por el temor a diversas cosas, desde cierta variedad de hormigas hasta los eclipses de Luna. La vida de la gente machiguenga ha estado marcada por la constante necesidad de observar algunos tabúes.*
